...at best meaning a '98 ZJ would be 15 years old right now.

To the other folks- My '96 is my daily driver. I've been across the country once in it and have no hesitations about doing it again as far as my safety is concerned.

If I was truly concerned with my safety in any vehicle- I wouldn't drive at all! It's a risk I'm willing to take to have the luxury of an automobile.

Good luck to those who go in and get a free hitch. As mentioned, this recall will probably cost Chrysler less than the alternative unfortunately but either way- I'm sure the sticker on new cars will reflect whatever they do to some degree.

You'll always pay for "it" one way or another. That's just how it works.

I think I've dumped about $25k in my 5.9 in the 3 years I've owned it. Chrysler owes me nothing!

They *should* have built it with long arms. They *should* have built it with heads that don't crack. They *should* have put stonger axles in it... Ect, ect...

But they didn't & I knew that going in... & so did you.

i'm not looking for a freebie but if someone is going to offer i'll take it...

i'm not on welfare, don't complain about the economy or life not being fair (that's like complaining about water being wet) and i have a job

i even have a hitch sitting in my garage... but i'd have to clean off the rust and repaint it which really cuts into my sitting around drinking beer thinking about doing things time

Gee the thread I started (I think it was the first btw) was much nicer

I got a hitch literally 3 weeks ago from the junkyard. I'm still unclear as to weather it's just a hitch or hitch and skidplate. Also, will they also install wiring for the hitch?

Odds are, I'm going to go get my free hitch. As stupid as I think it is that they have to recall a nearly 20 year old vehicle. If they're giving away free stuff, why not?

Damn lol someone is upset. You can't tell me if someone was giving you something of value to you for free (given its not like a grandmother who wants to be nice but it would be wrong to take) you wouldn't take it. I'm on Chrysler's side with this one, but there's no reason why I shouldn't take advantage of the opportunity to get a new trailer hitch/skidplate, and there's nothing wrong with asking about what they are offering me. If they tell me "Sorry you get nothing" I've got no problem with that.

I know that nothing is free better than anyone in my generation, I've paid for just about everything I own, I'm fiscally responsible and I'm on track God-willing to graduate with minimal debt. I've been very blessed to have parents that care about me and help me out and pay for my school and not a day goes by I don't think about what they've done for me.

This should be just a friendly conversation about a decision made by a government agency, and we are all just giving our opinions and discussing the results. No need to get mad.

I totally agree. Theres more people here that will go for the recall than those who wont. I live my life just as honest as the rest of you but im not going to turn down something free.

That's where I'm at too! Hell I have a trailer hitch so I'm not even gonna be effected by this. But there are some things that are given free, usefully by nice people and not corporations though

I think if I get a recall and I take into the dealer and they install a hitch for free and don't charge me that means it was free. I really don't understand your statement well in a way yes I do. So what it's a recall and someone might get a free hitch who cares? The problem with this mentality is its the same one that can't stand it when someone gets a pay raise at work and the same one that thinks everyone should be making min wage except for them of course. Its a safety recall and if the person takes it in for safety reasons or just to get a free hitch it really doesn't matter.

I'm paying myself through college and would like a hitch for my vehicle. Instead of almost dropping $80 on one I'm getting it for free. I think I'll take it. If I can't get it then its whatever. Its the people that complain about not getting free stuff or about the free product/service that I can't stand.

I honestly hope that Jeep charges full price for parts and labor when installing the trailor hitch for "safety reasons" based on the age of the vehicle and the impact speed required for the gas tank to be punctured.

Too bad the recall wasn't for the itty bitty brake rotors, I have hitch but very little stopping power when I tow the camper.
