Check Gauges/ Check Battery

I was driving to work in this snow storm this morning and a couple minutes after starting the jeep the check gauges light came on. The display computer showed a check battery and check cables warning. The gauge on the dash was all the way left showing 0. The jeep started right up and seemed to drive fine. One the way home a few hours later there was no light and now warnings at all. I didn't notice the position of the gauge because I was just concerned about getting home in the snow. I was told by a friend that it may be a sign of the alternator going. Is this the likely case or could it be something else. Or just a fluke. Thanks.

Just for more information, the jeep has been sitting in the driveway during the past few weeks while I take the train to work. I have only used it lately to go a couple miles to my other job on the weekends. I drove it around about 20 miles yesterday with now problems.

I would check your cables for corrosion and check you ground connection to the motor.

On some years the voltage regulator is part of the ECM/PCM module (Might also be for yours).. Why on earth jeep put it there instead of on the alternator who knows..

Might want to have your charging system checked before replacing anything.. edit: but then again I guess if you replace the alternator and it still does it, you know its the voltage regulator.. Unless someone knows a way to test this..

well this is the code i got #47 (Battery voltage sense input below target charging during engine operation. Also, no significant change detected in battery voltage during active test of generator output circuit. (voltage too low)

I am having this problem this morning. Check battery warning comes on and gauge drops to 0. When I turn it off and put the key to acc it comes up to 9, but as soon as I start it, it drops back to zero. I drove it all the way home yesterday (1 hour). This morning though it didn't make it, I had to buy a battery just to get the thing home.

I have the day off and need to get it fixed, any suggestions? Good ground, corrosion free.
