Check Engine light is on- trouble pulling codes

My "check engine" light has come on and I have been trying to following directions on how to diagnose the problem by turning the ignition on,off,on,off, then on (as per jeep wiki recommendation) to pull the code.

However, this method is not working or I am doing something wrong.

I've called a local CJ's Tire & Auto shop, they charge $85 to diagnose. Pep boys is $100. I would prefer to diagnose for free, then see if I can fix it myself (if it is something simple like a loose hose or wire) The nearest Autozone (free diagnostic) is 70 miles from me.

Any ideas?

I have been getting check engine light coming on and finally took it to a Jeep shop in SW/Denver area. They told me it is a speed senor in my transmission. 4x4 Repair Service, All Wheel Drive Repair Specialists South Denver and Littleton they should be able to help you ask for Dave he has been helping me. Just say Rod told you to call he will know who I am because my Jeep has kept him scratching his head. Phone 303-470-0286
