Changing Transmission fluid to ATF 4 from purple colored fluid

Alright so I have my 1996 ZJ with the 4.0 Motor, I did a pan drop of the transmission today and I found that the fluid the PO used was purpleish brown. I know the PO changed the tranny fluid because the pan edges had evidence of being sanded down in an effort to being cleaned and it didn't look as bad as my dad's ford when we did his.

My question is this, I used ATF 4+ which is red, the stuff I collected out of the pan is a completely different color? Is it bad that they were mixed together? what fluid did the PO use?

On another slightly related note, I want to replace my brake fluid, does anyone know if there is a problem with mixing DOT 3 and DOT 4 brake fluid? I'm not sure what is in there because IDK what the PO used.

On the plus side at least PO took good care of the car to do a tranny fluid change

Color is not near as important as smell. Change the fluid and move on. As long as both are pre and up to ATF 4 compliant it doesn't matter.

I don't know if I've ever seen purple trans fluid. Something was added or the fluid is burnt or something. And it's not royal purple since royal purple is red. All you can really do is drain it and replace it with atf + 4.

Some brake fluids are not compatible, if there is any doubt, just read the brake fluid label. Some of them will say it's compatible with both.

It should smell sweet. If it smells burnt then for sure it needs changing.

I could have sworn we put royal purple in my friends jeep and we expected it to be purple but it was red. This was years ago though.

Bumping this thread.. I installed a trans cooler on my jk yesterday.. I was going to drain and fill. I began to drain into a clean jug and the fluid was purple. Not burnt red, straight purple. I thought the previous owner installed royal purple, so I put it back in. I had spilled about half a quart, went to advance and bought 1 quart of royal purple max ATF. It's red like normal trans fluid. Doesn't smell like regular ATF tho..
