changing front axle shaft..axle nut

quick question, how do you guys tighten the axle nut...i know its 175 ft/lbs but do you tighten it with tire on the ground or does someone apply the brakes while its still on jackstands?

Thanks

You could apply the brakes. If the wheel still spins try this. I jammed a rod or a big screwdriver that fit into the vent holes on my disc brake through my caliper (there's a little hole up there on the caliper where you inspect the brake pad wear). It makes a stop for your rotor and then you can tighten away.
