To change or not change fluid

I have a 2001 WJ, auto. 118,000 miles on it. Never had any tranmission work as far as I know. Wife had it at the oil change place and they told her the fluid is brown and burnt. The car seems to run and shift normally. Am I too far along to do the filter and fluid change on the transmission? I have read that higher mileage cars should avoid it if possible.

Never too late to change filter/fluid.

There is some sort of sentiment that you shouldn't change out _all_ the fluid in the transmission, meaning the total 14 quarts or whatever it is that includes the fluid trapped in various places in the transmission like the torque converter for example.
This is probably what you've heard.

Doing a regular filter/fluid change will do no harm and I would definitely do it ASAP if it has never been done before. Just don't take it to QuickLube or some place like that, never know what they'll put in. If you do, at least bring your own ATF+4 and have them put it in.
I saw mopar ATF+4 for sale at WalMart of all places the other day...

Your worries are based on tranny flush stories for high milers. A genuine concern.

I bought "MY JEEP" for my wife
I bought "MY OTHER JEEP" for my daughter [she sold it]
I finally bought one for me

Never have it flushed but drain & refill every 30,000 miles.

Good point, flushing as they do can harm the filter. not good.

I just serviced mine with 138K on it. I had no issues plus i changed the filter.
