Never too late to change filter/fluid.
There is some sort of sentiment that you shouldn't change out _all_ the fluid in the transmission, meaning the total 14 quarts or whatever it is that includes the fluid trapped in various places in the transmission like the torque converter for example.
This is probably what you've heard.
Doing a regular filter/fluid change will do no harm and I would definitely do it ASAP if it has never been done before. Just don't take it to QuickLube or some place like that, never know what they'll put in. If you do, at least bring your own ATF+4 and have them put it in.
