cd problem

I have just purchased a 96 GC. at first was unable to get cd to play. After fiddiling around I was able to play a cd for a short period of time and now nothing..all I get is (ERR #1). After reading a few posts i am maybe thinking the buttons are bad and not the player?Could one of the buttons be stuck and not allowing the player to process properly? Can it just be the player is dirty? and if so how do I clean?
Thanks in Advance
