car wont start in park, but will in neutral

i went to start my car this morning and it wouldnt start in park, but when i put it in neutral it started right up, and now it wont start in park anymore, this has never happened before. any ideas anyone?

98 Jeep Grand Cherokee laredo 5.2 L

Check the interlock switch.

do a search bro theres a few topics on this. Netrual saftey switch is bad or not engaging.

Mine does the same. It's the saftey switch. It's a $150 dealer part and until I can't start the ZJ at all... it will stay like that.

Not sure but have you checked the recalls, although the recall for my 97 has something to do with the shift detent, so I would guess that sometimes the shifter doesnt lock properly in the detent. You may want to check it out though seeing as if the shifter isnt all the way in park or registering park it waouldnt start.

150 dollar part? I have a work order right here that states it was 15 dollars plus install...

I have a 4 speed 2000 XJ that needs a new neutral switch. Napa wants $350 for the switch but several online stores are only asking $45 for the same switch. From what I can tell, the $15 switch is only for the 3 speed.
