car won't go into reverse

Last night i took my car out and i backed out of my driveway perfectly. 3 hours later, when i was leaving my friends house i put the car into reverse and it acted as if it was in park. One of my friends had push the car while it was off and in neutral until i had enough space to make a U-turn. Now i made the U-turn and got home safely. Now i went outside to see whats wrong with the car, and Park Drive 1 and 2 work fine, but Neutral acts as drive as well and Reverse puts the car into Park Basically. I want to know if this is a common problem and if i had to ge tit fixed about how much would it cost?

This is a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee

First,

quit insulting your ZJ by calling it a car.

Second,

your shift cable may need adjusting. Is there a Cottman transmission place nearby. They do transmission inspections for free.
