Can someone identify this trans?

Found a 242 with 12,000mi on it for $400. Thought about getting it to swap out my 249. Comes with the trans it was on, but I don't know what it is, neither does the owner. Any help?

call a Chrysler dealership. Tcase is easy to swap alone if that's all you want. Depending on your driving habits and use of the vehicle, 249 (stronger case) could be the better option for you. It is for me.

Solid advice. I like the way she drives with the 249 currently. If nothing else I thought about picking it up if the VC ever goes on the 249. I heard it's pricey to rep[lace. Either way I'll stick with the 249 for now. I've only driven it for a week.

Looks like 42RE to me; it's got this solenoid loom connector on it, so it must be electrically controlled.
5.2's had 46RH which is hydraulically controlled.

ps - could be a 44RE too, I think they were used on 5.2 too. Or 46re from 5,9 engine

What's the shape of the pan? A 44 would be like an old TF904, which is a square with one corner cut off. I believe the 46 is based on the 727, which has more of an odd shape to it.

I've got a 42RE from a '99 WJ, my trannny pan looks exactly the same as on the photos.

PS: Just noticed the corner of an enginge on one of the photos. Not sure it's a 4.0, could be some V8 - 5.2 or 5.9

Motor is a 4.0. Cause if you imagine the picture if it was flat like it'd be in the vehicle, the valve cover is on top. Plus its too small fto be a v8 lol

Its a 42RE. IF you look at the engine, by the Distributor Cap is a plate. If your careful and clean it really well, I THINK you could get the VIN of the vehicle it came out of. From there, you could run a carfax and get Somewhat accurate mileage on engine and tranny.
