Can I swap a 44RE with a 42RE ?

I have a 1996 GC 5.2 AWD, has the 44RE. Tranny is slipping like a *****, and I know a dude who has a 42RE from a wrecked 4.0 for sale real cheap. Will it work?

42re is 4.0 ONLY

Gotcha, maybe I'll adjust the bands and replace the filter and see if it helps, I don't freakin' know. Any other possibiltys, because it wont upshift either?
