Can I change from U-joint style front axle shaft to CV-style??

Just what it says. Any advice on changing from the U-joint style front axle shafts I currently have to the constant velocity style? From what I've been finding online the CV style are much less expensive.

Any special tips or tricks I need to know if I decide to do this.

I'm getting a low speed knock sound that I think I've narrowed down to a bad u-joint, so I'm thinking about doing new axle shafts (either u-joity or CV), new bubs.berarings, and new brakes. All at the same time. Figure at about 150K, these would be good preventative items.

Thanks in advance!!!

any zj shaft will work, and instalation of the u- joint shafts is the same as the cv shafts.

soak the hub to nuckle bolts with PB. there are 3 per side. and make sure you have something that will give you enough leverage to break loose the outside 36mm nut.

Are the CV shafts as strong as a U-Joint?

from what ive heard, no. but for moderate wheeling they will take whatever you throw at them.

U-joints are more durable. Like sandman said though, CV's are ok for moderate wheeling. You have to keep an eye on the rubber boots around em' for any cracks or tears, you dont want dirt or water and mud getting in the CV.

CV Joints are stronger then u-joints of comparable size until you turn a CV joint, then it becomes weaker.

Can replace U-joints (are servicable) and more often then not, you have wheels turned when the joint will break.

Thats why Im replacing my stock cv front driveshaft with a u-joint style cv driveshaft. So if a u-joint goes out, all I'll have to do is replace the u-joint.

Just a note, quite often when a u-joint goes out in an axle shaft for instance, it'll blow the ears off of one of the half axles and make replacement impossible.

I gots air tools. I'm assuming an impact wrench will do it, right?? Any risk of using the impact wrench??

I've ordered my parts. New CV style axle shafts for both sides, new hub/bearings assemblies, new ceramic pads, and new rotors.

Besides the 36mm socket, any other special tools or lubes I need to have on hand??

nope, your set. grease your caliper pins and if you want you can put antisqueal on the back of the pads.

You realize that a stock U joint driveshaft will cause vibrations on a lifted GC right?

Hua? What are you talking about? A stock front drive shaft with u-joints at both ends still had a Double-Cardan joint at one end and a single U-joint at the other - same as an aftermarket one will have.

Almost nobody wheels their ZJ/WJ hard on this forum to blow the ears off. We yet to see any broket u-joint on this forum. I'm not even talking about 760x, there is yet to be a thread about broken 297x or even 260x.

Broken CV shafts, well I don't have to tell you guys, you see those threads every week
