After installing my new camshaft in my 4.0, purchased off of rockauto, I looked down through the lifter bores. It appears towards the front of the engine that the cam lobes aren't perfectly centered with the lifter bores. It isn't off center a dramatic amount, the lifters will still ride nicely on the cam. From my understanding I believe they do this so when the engine is running the timing chain and oil pressure will pull the camshaft forward against the pin and spring installed in the camshaft pulley nut retained by the timing chain cover? Correct me if I'm wrong, I just want to be sure nothing is wrong with this cam I bought. Thank you

not sure but that looks like a lifter bore, possible on #1 cylinder. I don't see a cam lobe in the hole. are you sure about this being a cam for a 4.0?

Yes, that is looking through the first lifter bore on the front side of the engine. I've drawn a line where the edge of the cam lobe is, and I've also uploaded it to tinypic for a better quality picture: http://i62.tinypic.com/2i8ycfn.jpg The cam looked almost identical to the old one. I bought it off of rockauto under "98 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0" so I'd hope it's the right one!

Grabbed a picture of the old cam. Top lobe in the picture is the front most one. The wear shows that it wasn't centered also

I see now, the stuff in the picture is the assembly lube, right? it looks fine, I would say go for it. I just built my 4.0 and I honestly didn't check the cam alignment.
