A/C issues... Help! Its hot as hell in chicago right now! lol

1998 5.9 GC. Had the dreaded evap core damage... Installed a new evap core and had a shop charge the system for me last summer(didn't replace the dryer - i now know i should have). This year, the system isn't working so good. Seems like my charge is still good according to my gauges . My main issue is that when I stop moving the A/C stops working sometimes. Also, when it's really hot out (like it is today over 100deg) the A/C isn't very cold. I've noticed that the electric fan only runs when the engine hits temp where it tells the fan to turn on. Is the electric fan supposed to always run when the A/C is on?

Just trying to get an idea of what to pinpoint before I go replacing all sorts of parts.

I feel your pain, bro. Compressor keeled over on me two weeks ago right at the start of a road trip to Oklahoma, and we're fixin' to take the return to Alabama---800+ miles---at night because our AC is out!

I'd still rather be in a Jeep than whatever foreign crap is out there

I know this is almost a year old now, but I figured I would come back and post my resolution. The electric fan was toast. The low speed wasn't always turning on, and that's what was causing my ac not to work. I ordered a replacement fan and pigtail from kolak and now i'm good as new. Hopefully this information helps someone.

Good thanks for posting, does the electric fan go into low speed upon simply turning ac on, or is the condenser temperature somehow inputing a temp. to it?

It's supposed to turn on as soon as the ac is turned on. So if you stop, and no air is running through the condenser, the fan pulls air through and continues to cool off the condenser.

Ok coo,l I just bought a 5.9 limited this year and have not yet had to use the ac on a hot day so I'll keep this in mind.

If your fan is toast, and you need to replace it, this one is the only one that you can buy: http://www.amazon.com/VDO-PM9069-Rad.../dp/B000C7QSBG It's the same fan, but it has a connector on it rather than a pigtail, so you have to buy this pigtail: http://www.amazon.com/Motorcraft-WPT.../dp/B000IYK79C and solder it onto the pigtail you cut off your old cooling fan motor.

If your 5.9 is running warmer than usual (not staying around 190) then the low speed on the motor is toast.

There's a series of photos that tells you what you need here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/4010925...n/photostream/
