From Edmunds.com :

Quote:
After all that happened in 1996, 1997 saw but a handful of changes. Chief among them was the availability of the V8 engine for two-wheel-drive Grand Cherokees and the six-cylinder engine's qualification as a transitional low-emission vehicle (TLEV) in California. The antilock braking system was refined for smoother operation, the base stereo was upgraded, carpet quality was improved and some new colors, such as Deep Amethyst Pearl and Bright Platinum, debuted.
Later in the year, a sporty TSi model debuted, featuring 16-inch alloy wheels, 225/70R16 tires, leather seating and a premium stereo. The TSi brought the number of Grand Chero-kee models offered back to three: Laredo, TSi and Limited.

A friend of mine who works in a shop is who told me about the turbo Jeep (TSI). Plus I would find it rather strange that Chrysler would use TSI on its Turbo Talon's and have TSI mean something totally different for Jeep. I am not exactly sure though. PM someome from here They should be able to answer any questions you have.

Definately not a turbo

I have a one page brochure of the TSI from when it first came out in 1997. I dont know what the TSI stands for but I can tell u it doesnt have a turbo. It comes standard with the 4.0 and the only differences were cosmetic. The grill is painted the same color as the body (like the limited),light grey bumpers and slide clading, and different style 16" rims. It was only available in three colors(black, blue and platnium). The interior has specially designed leather seats(standard), wood triming (like the Limited) and a longer list of options, compared to the Laredo, like auto climate control, heated seats, moonroof, V8, etc. All in all, it was an upgraded version of the Laredo with Limited features.
