Buying a 95 Grand Cherokee in 7 hours..

Hey Everyone, someone that I work with is getting rid of his 95 Grand Cherokee Limited for a bit under $1000 and I'm really thinking about taking this plunge.. I've never had an SUV before and have been doing some research the past couple of days and have to let him know in 7 hours as he has others interested...

So.. I'm counting on YOU to steer me in the right direction in the light of the information he provided me below:

Couple of "issues" he mentioned with the vehicle are:

Remote starter/security WAS drawing power from battery when vehicle was turned off, so he found out which fuse was drawing power and pulled it, but just for piece of mind, he disconnects the battery when car's not driven. The fuse he pulled was for the remote starter/security system so when he reconnects the battery, the security light on dash blinks and he has to wait until the interior lights turn off, then puts the key in the trunk and turns it to the right half way and interior lights go on again, which disables the security, now one can start the car.

All power windows don't work except for driver side, he said they all went out at the same time which indicates an electrical issue.

Rear window wiper doesn't work.

AC doesn't work but heat and everything else is ok.

Gas cap sometimes turns in place (lock mechanism malfunction?) so need to stick something in there to lock the teeth then can take cap off and fill up.

No radio in dash (was stolen, he never replaced it)

Very rusty/damaged rocker panels (part towards front wheels) on both sides of vehicle.

Odometer stuck at 110K miles.

Otherwise no mechanical problems, no leaks, drives good, approximately 120K miles on it. Thanks in advance!

Unless that is going to be your beater and never see the road, I would avoid that like the plague. Sounds like a hacked up electrical issue and those are a pain to fix. Rusty area is right at or part of your "frame" (jeep is a unibody) so that is not good. You would be looking at a grand plus to fix all the issues where you can find a better deal then that. IMO. But, dont give up as Grands can be a blast.

I would steer clear unless you get it for 100 dollars and want to drive it about on a farm for a few years

Thanks for the reply.. He let me take it home for my lunch break so got a chance to drive it a bit and noticed a couple of more things.. The passenger side floor is wet under the mat, speedometer doesn't work and under the hood i noticed some "wet/oily looking parts, like the whole bottom part of the engine (i guess lower manifold?) When looked under the vehicle noticed some red drops formed on hoses and looked oily.. I mean I understand it's a 20 year old vehicle but I guess even for $800 I think these would be a headache to fix.. Got some pics, if someone else wants to chime in or has different opinion, I could load them up. I might ask him to wait another day until I get more input..

Edit: He said the windows not working happened shortly after he had the driver side door replaced (red door from junk jeep, his is green) SO that will be yet another thing to "fix" and paint it to match the rest of the car..

Don't buy it. There's plenty of other zjs out there with alot less problems. I paid 1000 for mine little over a year ago. No electrical problems to speak of.

You would be better off taking your money and going to a casino.
At least then you would only loose $800 and not have the deal with the years of headaches to come.
Or you will hit the jackpot and be able to buy a better ZJ and have the money to fix the problems when they happen.

Sounds more like 220K miles then 120K.

If you do decide to get it anyway just don't expect it to be a DD anytime soon.

Steer clear of that money pit! Yeah, what a deal at $800 when you have to put $2K in it to make it road-worthy. I'd start picking apart the problems you've mentioned but there are just too many and wouldn't know where to begin.

I feel you could do a LOT better, by waiting to find a ZJ in better shape. They're fun to run, but with that many problems, on a rusted out jeep, I'm not sure I'd touch it, even if given to me.

The fact that he never forked over $5.00 for a new gas cap should tell you all you need to know. Probably hasnt seen any kind of maintenance since he's had it. RUN the other way.

Thanks for the advice and wisdom. Everything said makes sense.. Told him I wasn't interested BUT my interest is now peaked...will be browsing on here for more knowledge and hope to come across another Jeep that's in better condition.

Good call
That would have fit the Just Empty Every Pocket saying and then some.

There are plenty out there you just have to be patient. Shortly after I got my 95 5.2 limited there was a 98 5.9 that came up for sale for about what mine was and it already has most of what I am now saving up to do over the next few years.

(not that im complaining, just proving a point that there is always something better out there)

Dodged a bullet. I paid $1900 for mine with 160k and zero issues.

Watch you local CL and you'll find a deal. It may take a few months.
