Which Busings Are Shot????

Recently I've been getting a scrapping sound from the front suspenstion when I go over speed bumps slowly (making the suspension travel far). The sound is significanly reduced, if not eliminated when I go over one wheel at a time (as oppose to 2 wheels / 1 full axle at a time once).

Would I be correct to guess from this that it is my SWAY BAR BUSHINGS that are shot? Any other likely candidates on the shot bushing list? Could my shocks make a noise like that if they are toast?

Thanks for the help!!!

Yes,

it could be the bushings and they are very easy to replace even to the most novice mechanic.

Lay under your Jeep and do bench presses with it, this will re-enact the speed bump theory and you will be right there watching and listening.
If it's to low for you to get under drive it onto some bricks, cinder blocks, boards or ramps if you have them and then do some bench presses

I had some serious popping and creaking noises and I THINK they were all due to the trackbars being loose. Ball Socket joints seem to be a big culprit too. As for rubbing sounds though, couldnt tell ya. Make sure your swaybar connectors aren't laying in the road somewhere...

Jon,

after the install of my lift, I had the same problem. I got underneath and made sure every bolt was bubba tight.

So you guys figure it is likely the sway bar bushings, that's good, cause they are a heck of a lot easier to do then the control arm bushing right?

Thanks for the tips, I'll try out the bench press test, I don't know if it will get the jeep to move enough though, it only squeaks/scraps when the suspension travels fairly far.

You'll have to really push and pull on it, or get under it and have a friend really push on it, or spray each bushing with silicone lubricant not a oil based lubricant, oil based eats bushings.

After finding which bushings are squeaking replace them with polygraphite bushings, they will improve handling and road feel and never ever wear out

Which bushings are easy to replace (ie. basic hand tools and a few hours)???

I'm guessing:
swaybar
trackbar

Am I correct and are there any others?

I'm thinking I'll just replace all the bushings that are EASY TO REPLACE and hope that fixes the problem!!

I ran mine to Sears and had them do a full suspension evaluation. They tightened everything and all noises went away. I love it. Now if I could just get hold of the guy who installed/maintained that lift.

I'm thinking it was done with nothing more than a flatblade and a pair of channel locks. It was that bad under there. NO reason a right rear shock's flange nut should just come undone lol.

I took my '04 to the dealer and they told me they had a problem with the sway-bar bushings and I had to wait for the parts. They said it was on a "National Back-order". I asked if it was a re-call and he said no. You may want to see if your dealer will give you the new ones. Just a thought.
