Budget Tire Rack Project Now with Photos

So I hate.....hate is too gentle a word.....that my spare tire is in the cab of my truck. Even with the really nice orvis tire cover it just took up too much room. So I decided that I really wanted either a swing gate setup or a roof mounted rack. But.....availability and price limited me. So I saw where this guy online made a rack out of tube steel and I thought what a great excuse to go buy a little welding machine. I know...I won't spend $250 on a rack but I'll go and buy a welding machine. So I was shopping for tube steel and by the time I would have gotten the materials I would have spent a ton on a rack that I didn't really like the looks of anyway. So I left Lowe's a little disappointed and headed over to Target to pick up some stuff.....and one of the things I needed to buy was on this rack that would have been just perfect. I grabbed a manager and haggled with him to check for a rack in the back that was damaged. He found one and I loaded it up. I got it home and used the saws all to cut the brackets off and then used my die grinder to grind down the welds and sand it. I pulled some measurements and drilled some holes. Then I painted the rack with some flat black plasti-dip for a thick durable coating. I mounted the rack under the luggage rack so that I can still use it because I ran the bolts through the top of the tire and put the nut under the new rack so that I can pull the tire off and toss it in the back and go. Because of the curve in the roof and the fact that I wanted to mount it so low profile I went ahead and put a couple of rubber bumpers made out of polyurathane washers under the rack so that they would hit on the plastic rail on the roof before the nuts smash into the roof in case I hit something hard enough to make the rack bounce. So here it is guys. I plan on mounting two lights in the front and two lights in the back as well.

Guess I could have given more build info. The rack is held to the roof rack by four 3/8x3" bolt with washers and stopnuts. The tire is held to the rack by two 1/2x8" bolts with a few washers to make up the slack and lock washers and standard hex nuts on the bottom. I have had it on for about a week now and you barely hear it move at all and it makes very little wind noise. I was standing on top of the tire and it wasn't bending the tube steel or the rack at all. I'm 150lbs. Haven't seen a milage difference yet either. Over all I spent about 15 bucks on it.

Stu,

can you imagine the wind noise from a 33 MT hanging out up there?

Ive herd a lot of people say the same thing, but you have to figure how many times do you really get a flat? Sure if you get one a week, you have bad luck and shouldnt mount a tire up there. But within the two years Ive owned my ZJ Ive only got one flat and it doesnt count because it was a slow leak and not a blow out. I coulda drove home but didnt.

It was some kind of recycling rack from target that they were using as a temp display. If I put an aggressive tire up there I will put a cover on it......and a small crane to help me get it down.
