I wanted to get a 4.0 when I first started shopping for a zj but once I drove the 5.2 my mind was made up. The only downside I've found from the v8 is the lack of room under the hood.

whats he want it for? thats the biggest question. I have the 4.0 and I love it. Its easy to work on and gets great gas mileage, but I use it as my daily driver and dont wheel much. If he wants more power and crap mileage, then you have your v8s

1996 ZJ 4.0 Laredo... you know, the one with the ripped leather seats

it will be his DD/weekend wheeler, occasionally towing his jet ski or his dads small pontoon boat

I voted 5.2L, seems like it's just a slightly better choice if he's going to tow stuff with it.

All about that unibody life.

I had both 4.0 and 5.2 both with 3.73: surprisingly the 5.2 mileage was only slightly worse could easily get 300 mi per/tank with 4.0 the 5.2 could squeeze just 280mi per/tank. Both vehicles have identical BFG All Terrain 31's. The 5.2 was way fun to drive and the 4.0 felt lathargic on the highway. Didn't do much off roading with either one.
I got rid of the 4.0 and now have a 5.9 to compare to my 5.2 only have not yet had it long enough to get a feel of the extra cubes, my wifes been running it.
DEFINATELY V8

V8! I have a 5.2 and 5.9. I haven't really drove the 5.9 much(blown trans). My 5.2 is awesome in the hills and mountains of northern VT!

That's a HUGE difference. That's between 50 and 100 miles difference in tank range.

Highway miles would be near the same range. City driving would be worse in the 4.0 with stopping and going. If you want to put larger tires on it the 4.0 is a real dog. You need to spring for gears and that starts to get costly too.

I have the 5.2 and love the power 5.9 would be awsome to have. I just find it hard to find engin parts at a Jy every now and then for the V8s... the 4.0 I6 parts you can find with your eyes closed around me.

My 98 5.2 gets easily 300+ a tank. Average around 17-18mpg on the interstate at 70mph. City is where I consume the most fuel, at usually around 14ish mpg. 2" BB, with not so good 31's, on 87 octane.

In my opinion id go for the V8's. Decent gas mileage and the power is there.
