Blender sound at cold start (updated with audio Post #9)
You can hear the noise here:
jeep :: MVI_0128.flv video by rflem550 - Photobucket
When it's really cold outside and I start my Jeep (02 GC V8) for the first time in the morning, theret is a loud sound that sounds like a blender...immediately after startup.....It only lasts a couple of seconds, then goes away and then I hear my normal engine sound.
Any idea what is making that loud noise on cold mornings?

I could be the starter remaining engaged for a few seconds too long.

I had an XJ once that did that, but it turned out to be the clutch release bearing (5-speed). Yours is probably the starter, as mentioned previously, but could be a bearing on the belt tensioner, alternator, power steering, or whatever. Unless it gets worse, and lasts longer, it could be quite evasive.

I have the same problem, however not so pronounced as yours. I traced it to the alternator bearings by having some one start the GC when I was leaning under the hood. I have new alternator at the ready when old one drops dead.

I'm bumping this (almost exactly a year later) because the cold is back.
When i crank my Jeep on cold mornings (around 40 or below) i get this really loud sound from under the hood for about second or two. Sounds like something winding up really fast and loud and then it quits.
Any other ideas or feedback? I haven't been able to trace the sound to any particular place b/c I live alone and do not have someone that can listen under the hood while i crank it (or vice versa).
It's getting LOUD!!!

Oh yeah, I replaced the starter in June because it died. So it's not that.

Mine does the same when it's really cold outside. Probably the power steering pump.

take your serpentine belt off and start it, see if the noise continues.

it will tell you if the sound is in the accessory drive.
perfectly safe to start and run a motor without the serp belt.
