Binding and lurching turns

Taking fairly sharp turns at very slow speeds my front end binds and lurches...it doesnt really hop but it groans slightly. what is going on? CV's?

Thats exactly what it is. Mine has been doing it for well over a year now but thankfully it hasnt gotten any worse (but i dont wheel my jeep) and its really only bad in the summer time after driving for extended periods. You just learn how to do lots of 3 point turns and stuff when moving into tight spaces. =)

The dealership here in Raleigh has quoted me right at a thousand dollars to have it done. Ive read that typically it is a $1,000 to $1,500 job. As for me, i'll prob only have my jeep for another year or two anyway before getting a newer one and it doesnt really bother me so im not fixing it.

Unfortunately yes if you wheel your jeep and do a lot of tight turning and stuff you're gonna have to forego the arb bumper and 33's and get the VC fixed. As for me, my jeep is just my daily driver to keep the miles off my 350z so im gonna live with the bad VC.

If youre handy with tools and what not you may be able to fix it yourself and save half the cost.

$1500? No way, why would you go to the dealership for that?

A new 231 HD TC from TCU (Transfer Cases Unlimited) is less then $1000

Go to a junk yard and pull a 242 or 249 or hell, even a 231 for less then $100 around here Neil. You may have to swap input shafts and since you have a 93, the shaft MAY be different, I suggest contacting EMTimZJ and asking him since that area is his cup of tea.

I have the 249... if that changes anything... Install myself... hmmm maybe, but I have a family frend that would would do it at his shop for around half the price or most shops. If I do bite the bullet and decide to do it myself... wht am I getting myself into, should I just scrap the entire T-case for the new one.. just swap some parts.. what? and how will I know the one at the junkyard isn't the same way?

oh and what is the best junkyard T-case... old 249 or 231 or what? I found a "builder 249" for 100$ really close at a 4x4 used parts yard... what does "builder" mean?

The stealership replaced mine for seven bills. But, I'm a hardcore fan.

If I were you than I would install the np231, but me being me on the other hand will be installing a NV241OR Jeep Rubicon tcase. NP231s usually go for $75-$150 from what I have seen. I bought a 231 with an SYE installed for my ZJ years back for $300. I ended up selling it because I couldn't afford a new drive line.
There are many write-ups about this swap littered all over the web.

alright seven dollars it is! Haha but seriously $700 for the parts and labor? that doesn't seem bad at all. by the way, what causes these things to go out anyway?
