No.

96 is a one year only. I just did the same thing on my 96. As long a you get another one from a 96, it's plug and play. Your odometer will read whatever is stored in the new BCM btw.

97-98 have security features built in and it will run for a couple seconds and then shut off.

You may be able to have it reprogrammed by the dealership, but not worth the cost IMO even if it could be done.

No difference between V8 or I6. As for the alarm, I know that you can install a BCM from a non alarm ZJ to an alarmed ZJ. The alarm will not work until you activate it. But I have no idea what would happen if a BCM is installed from an alarmed jeep to a non alarmed jeep, my guess is nothing, no issue.

What do you mean? "The alarm will not work until you activate it"

The alarm will not work until you activate it in one of two ways. One with DRB3 scan tool or two by locking and unlocking the drivers door.

The OEM alarm still works by locking the driver's side door or activating it through the keyfob.

Changing the BCM does not effect the operation of the alarm.

Just be sure to get one from another 96 or it won't work. Doesn't matter what engine size or model (Base, Laredo or Limited).

Just remember that your odometer will change to whatever is in the replacement BCM. I was lucky and went from 216k miles down to 156K miles with a $4.00 swap. And, when I lock my doors now with the keyfob, my horn chirps like it's supposed to. My original BCM had that disabled.

I have a lot of recent experience with BCM's. I just changed mine out 3 times trying to fix some issues with wipers not parking or working with the delay and it did not help.

That's a whole other story though and I won't hijack your thread.

Why are you swapping yours out BTW?

Power drain. When the doors are shut there is a 2amp draw as soon as you open a door it goes away, Disconnect the BCM and no more draw so i am just seeing if that might be it...

Yes you can.

I can do one blindfolded with one hand tied behind my back now......

All you need is a phillips screw driver and a 10 mm socket. You can do it without the socket, but it comes out way easier if you remove the metal bar under the lower cover.

Okay because i have limited use of my left hand at the moment while working on the Door of the ZJ i was using a knife and it slipped and went into my wrist down to the bone so it hurts to use that hand.
