Bad timing and water pump

So after thinking I had a bad head gasket I tore apart my motor and found a hole in piston #1, I got everything back together and went to fill my cooling system and I noticed that it was dropping again several times. I got under the motor and looked and found a leak that was coming from the oil seal area, I read somewhere that it could be a leak coming from the hole from a bad water pump, can anyone give input into this? And would it be easier to take the head off again to fix the timing or try and do it all from the timing chain area?
