Oke people here is the deal.

The backup light switch is located on the `96 Jeep Grand Cherokee just right above the edge of the transmission pan on the drivers side .there is three wires hooked up to it.
To check if your switch is bad simply connect the two outer wires together with a paper clip or a piece of other wire, then turn the ignation on and look at the backup lights ,if they are on that means that probably(99%)switch itself is bad need to replace .Of course you need to check the lightbulbs and fuses first.

and now I have to go out there and fix mine .

good day every body!!

update

oke guys I did replace this switch.

what you need is:

-1 or 2 court of tranny fluid
-oil drainpan
-1" socket does not have to be deep
- quick hands

here is how it went : the switch is just a simple screw in switch so it`s easy to unscrew with the 1" socket . now when yuo take the old one out you have to have the new one real close becouse soon as u take the old one out the tranny fluid is gonna start to run out . be quick couse if you`re not you lose lots of fluid. screw the new in and make it tight .(no specs on that one) now when I had to put the connector back on I had to use a small hammer couse I could not push it back on.

NOTE : if you want to change the tranny fluid and filter by yourself
you can drain most of the fluid right thru there and then take the tranny pan off. I dont have a drain plug on mine so this comes pretty handy.

this was done on a `96 Jeep GrandCherokee Laredo , allwheel drive , automatic , 4.0 inline 6 cilynder
