Axle loud axle whine from D44a
Did some wheeling this weekend today on my drive home a loud whine started coming from the back. the whine started happening after a while on the highway it is VERY loud under acceleration (especially over 40) but quiet when cruising. it gets loud again when decelerating from 15-0. the breather tube came undone at one point so i think some dirty water could have gone down the tube.
When i got home i got under and checked it out. there is a slight leak from the pinion seal so i popped open the filler plug and it was full of fluid (it was a flat gray in color) i filled it with Royal Purple just about 1000 miles ago...
This is all i have for you guys so far anybody have any other ideas other than water in the diff?

If it was a flat gray, then water probably got in cause royal purple goes in purple and will probably just darken with age. I would change out the fluid.

does it whine constantly while its moving? or is it just when you let off the gas? If its constantly then its wheel bearings. If its just when you let off its diff. bearings.

loud whine
if you bearings are bad you would hear more of a grinding noise. Your shim on your ring and pinion is probably off. Basically that means the rack is not completly lined up, which causes your gears to make a howling noise, and eat the crap out of your ring and pinion. Take your carier apart and buy a shim kit. Have fun

The shim doesn't change everyday, it goes bad when you romp on your jeep off road. When the shim gets messed up, the noise varies. So it might seem like its changing. And if it is changing every day, your whole carier, ring and pinion are screwed.

the shim doesnt change unless a bearing chews it up
the pinion shim is pressed between the bearing and the pinion or between the case and inner pinion race
if the carrier side shims are damaged then the side bearings are severly worn
possibly you mean backlash or gear pattern which naturally (normally) moves a bit under load

I say start with some cheap gear oil from your local autoparts store. Gear oil turns grey with water. It may be too late, but maybe not.

Here we go
Here for everyone the easiest way to diagnose a noise in your rear end. First start by takeing your diff cover off and checking you axle and spider gears. If you you got metel chunks/teeth in the oil take your carier apart and replace your gears. But if its all good, move to your hub bearing assemlies. Jack up your car and take your rims off. Spin each side slowly and if you hear a grinding or weird noise, its most likely your hub bearing assembly. but if you do all of that and you still got a howling noise it's your ring and pinion.
