Automatic Transmission Question

Hey all, just found out that I have a one time opportunity to get my 96 ZJ back with a working and very cheap transmission from a wreck-the problem, its from a 98 xj, which although it is a 4.0 i6, like mine, the transfer case is pt 4wd not the FT quadra trac from my zj, just wondered if there was any way to make this work, or if it's even an issue,

Thanks for your time and let me know if you need more details!

sounds like you just scored a tranny and a T-case swap at the same time! do you know if its a 231 or a 242?

no clue bout anything, im a complete and total idiot when it comes to drive trains, all i know is that my full time 4wd would be gone with this new one, and wondered if it could cause problems with my shifter-would i have to replace the existing 4wd selector with the one from the donor jeep?

It won't work without quite a few other parts as well as wiring and computer modifications.

The XJ used an AW4 trans, your ZJ should have a 42RE trans. They are totally different transmissions. The AW4 uses a trans control module for shifting, the 42RE uses the common engine PCM. The AW4 could be adapted with the correct harnesses, modules, trans lines, shift linkages, drive shafts, crossmembers, mounts, etc... It seems to me it would not be worth it to adapt, but thats up to you.

The T-case could be adapted too with the proper donor parts, do a search on this forum, this has been discussed a lot.

Appreciate the input everyone I have decided to not pick it up, based on the various replies, and sadly, this will be the end of my ZJ, the time and effort and most importantly money spent, are not worth it in the end. It had a good run, but now will be someone else's Donor. Thanks again for your input, if I should ever find myself in need of advice for a Jeep I will certainly come here first.
