Automatic transmission Leak on a 2000 I6 - What to do?

I have a 2000 WJ I6 that is leaking like a stuck pig. I planned initially to replace the rear main seal and oil pan gasket. Now I am contemplating more work due to the auto trans leaking.

I had this vehicle sitting for the past 3 months because I have been driving a car that gets far better MPG. Now I go to drive it to move and "fix" the oil leaks and discover a rather large, about 1 cup, puddle of auto trans fluid sitting under the vehicle.

Since I will have her up on stands for the other work, how much is entailed in sealing up the transmission? Or am I overlooking a potentially larger problem? Is this type of work even something I can do with simple hand tools or do I need a much broader tool chest to fix it?

Thank in advance for all your help. I do love to drive her. I think she is pissed at me for "storing" her for 3 months, and this is her way of showing it.

Cheers ,

Allen

It depends on where the leak is. If it's like my wife's Neon (Gawd I hate that thing) and it's one of the coolant lines going to the radiator, it's a fairly easy fix.

Also if it's the pan gasket, another fairly easy fix.

If it's the front or rear shaft seal, I do believe you're in for a little more work. Like dropping the transmission out of the vehicle. There may be a way of doing the rear by only dropping the trnasfer case...

rear shaft seal is pretty easy, drop transfer case and swap it out, might as well do transfer case at same time. Depending on where the leak is, it might be the transfer case not the transmission leaking, tranny and TC oil looks a lot alike. Front seal is a complete tranny drop. No other way to do it as you have to remove the converter to get to the seal.

I am looking at both the A/T and trans-case now. No leak on trans-case.
I washed the underside earlier today. I will run for a week or so to see where the leak is coming from.

Thanks,

Allen
