Auto Dim rear view mirror

Hello, I have a 98 ZJ SE and the auto dimming mirror quick working sometime over the summer. It does not dim and the button on the bottom of the mirror no longer lights up green. Is there a fuse for the mirror or do I need to replace the mirror?

Thanks
Mike

if everything else still works its probably the mirror as the fuse operates multiple things. I recently got one from a junkyard for under $10

Thanks for the replies, the owners manual said that the fuse controlled several different things and they are all still working so I will replace the mirror.

Check the wiring contacts first before changing the mirror. I've fixed two other ZJs this way for other people. The inside mirrors rarely go bad.

Check to make sure they are fully plugged into the rear of the mirror? Or check for something like corrosion?

Mine was always dark also. I even took mine apart to check the photoelectric resisters, but could not figure anything out. The resisters worked, but the mirror never changed.

I found one at a junk yard and the guy even let me plug it in to check it before I bought it. $10 fix!

the reason I replaced mine was somehow an air bubble got into the dimming fluid so part of the mirror was black and the other part was clear. so they do randomly go bad.

Anyone know if I can swap in one of those dimming mirrors into a ZJ that didn't come equipped that way, is the wiring for the plug there already? I liked the auto dim feature, but my 98 doesn't have one. I know a lot a vehicles have the same harness from the factory, and the options just plug in. FWIW, I had the same issue as the OP on my 97, a JY unit fixed it.

I just swapped In the overhead console and the wiring was not there I had to go througb the steps to lower the headliner cut the hole remove part of the dash so I could route the wires, also had to repin the wires cause I took everything from a 93mine is a 94 so 1 connection was different. But the auto dim gets power from the overhead console wiring harness so u may as well grab the overhead console and wiring and swap it in. Took me half the day and having some help is nice too.

Pulled the console today, and found the wiring tucked up there. Auto mirror now installed.
Thanks

UPDATE: for future searches I replaced the mirror for a junkyard unit and it works. All the Grand Cherokees has their mirrors already taken but I did find the same one in a Durango.

Ozzie, do you have the overhead console? Chances are if you had the wiring for the auto dim mirror you'll have wiring for the overhead console as well.
