ATTN all 5.9ers

this is my second 5.9 where it seams like the rear diff is howling. or at least its a lot of road noise. if you have ever heard the noise of your brakes rubbing when you use them, its that sound but inside the rear of my zj. and its not my brakes. need opinions asap!!

Bad pinion bearings or bad carrier bearings most likely . Some have descibed it as the sound of a jet plane

I have owned three 5.9's. Two of them have had that sound you're describing. It's common.

Yep, what they all said. The best cure for it is an 8.8.

Mine was the carrier bearings and the washers from the limited slip coming apart. Total cost for rebuilding the limited slip, replacing the carrier bearings, and fill it with new fluid was 700 bucks from a reputable shop in town. Labor was why is cost so much.

D44a is a really crappy design for the ZJs and WJs, that's why they don't last long enough like an axle should. I understand wheel bearings go bad a couple times over 15 years and 100-200k miles, but not pinion or carrier bearings..

I've seen as new as few years old, well under 100k D44As with bad bearings, that's not something what should happen on a high quality axle (what the D44a is not in its solid axle version)

I've seen the d35 do the same things and same with the d30.

I've also seen d60s with carrier bearings spun in the bore with less than 50k.

You should see the life expectancy of those exact same bearings in the cnc equipment i repair. a few months is pushing it in some areas that don't even see harsh conditions or high speeds.

'97 zj 5.2, some stuff, some other suff, and some things that even work sometimes.

From what I heard the reason the carrier bearings go bad in the Dana44a is because the axle tubes were pressed in with 30 tons for force after the gears and bearings were installed that the factory. This deformed the shape of the Aluminum differential and over loaded the bearings.

All I did with my 44a was replace one carrier bearing, for $15 (timken), problem solved.
