ATF+4 in NP249 Transfer case?

Hello all,

I have always used ATF+3 in my transfer case (NP249). Changed at every 30K or 2 years.

Will switching to ATF+4 cause any problems? Or will it help to extend the life of the viscous coupler. (It's the original VC, with no problems)

TIA,
Jim

I really just want to say GO BLUE!!!

I think you can change. I am not really sure though. If your t-case is running fine though I don't see a need to change the fluid type. "If it aint broke don't fix it."

the vc is a sealed unit deal....so i dont think changing fluids is gonna hurt or help it either way.

I thought 249's had to have that special fluid from jeep? Or is that only in the wj's?

The 249 has a sealed VC... fluid changes will not effect the performance/life of the VC.
(as goodolboy stated )
But keeping up on your TC fluids will be better for the TC as a whole.

However, the 247 has a PC... (Progressive Coupler) basically the same thing as the VC but it has the ability to circulate the fluid in the TC through it to reduce wear and tear. This is why the 247 in WJ needs the uber special 247 TC fluid.

I use ATF+4 in my TC with no problems noted.

While it is true the VC is sealed. You still have an oil pump that can benefit from the reduced foaming and increased durability characteristics of +4.
