Ive never measured mine manually, but the lie-ometer says 19.8 avg between oil changes. This is a 72 mile commute with 1/3 city - 2/3 open highway with cruise at 65 (2k rpm). It's bone stock.

what kind of plugs and wires are you running?

Definitely time for a tune-up.

Hand calculating my MPG over five tanks I get right around 21mpg. The computer is usually about a half MPG higher. I'm also below 100' elevation 85% of the time and I drive probably about 60-70% highway so that helps my numbers. FWIW I only use Champion spark plugs.

I almost have it right...just one more repair. My 4.0L engine has all the power I need for daily driving and unlike what some people have said about the 4.0L, I don't have any trouble with power on the Interstate. Also pulls a small trailer like a champ. I have not been off road much, just a few trails. Not much weather related need for 4wd here in Alabama.
Same here! My 2wd '98 4.0L 218,000 miles, goes everywhere. I've only had mine for about 18 months, and gone through one winter but it wasn't too bad. I drive up and down the "south hill" in town to get to work, so I only average about 13mpg (short and hill ridden trips). But I towed a trailer a couple months ago across Washington and got 19mpg. On a separate trip to Montana with no trailer I got 22mpg. I always think about trading it for 4wd, but then I remember all the other vehicles I've been through out of boredom and realize I've grown up a bit. I've already put a lot of work into this thing. Had body damage when I bought it. Found a complete in tact ZJ in the JY in the exact same silver metallic color, with hood, passenger fender, grill, and header panel all perfect. I snagged that all up super fast. Now she's pretty. Replaced the water pump, fan clutch, shocks, windshield, detailed the bageebus out of her, new tires, lift supports, rear brakes, radiator hoses, rear driveline u-joints. Now I get to do all the steering ends, front brakes, radio and speakers, and possibly the fuel pump (longer cranking, hesitant hard starts 75% of the time). But I look at it and say "why get rid of it?" And we get some pretty hairy winters up here.

I have one I was given by my sister. Drove it for 3 years then sold it to a friend. He put a new computer and diff in it. I bought it back from him last year and it has been a DD since. Just turned over 200,000.
I see 2wd ZJs here in Atlanta all the time.

Even though I have a 5.2 4x4 zj, I've seen 2wd zj's on the trail, lifted with lockers and they keep up!

I've been driving the same 2wd for more than 10 years here in SoCal. In fact, its hard to find a nice low mileage 4wd around here, if your shopping, like I am. They are all 2wds.

I have no idea how everyone gets such good mileage out of these 4.0s. I get 14.5 mpg with average driving. The only way I can improve mine is to hit the metric button and at least think I'm getting better mpg.

I have a 2wd 4.0 zj. I usually average around 17 at home and 12 in the mtns of WV. I usually shift around 2000-2500 RPMs. Gets 22 mpg @70 mph on the highway, no complaints

The only way I can get 17 plus mpg is to hit the metric button which it was set on for many years until I realized the difference. I really don't now why mine is so different compared to others.'

Me neither. I have to drive the piss outta mine to only get 17. I don't know what rear gear mine (or anyone else's...) has. I might have to crawl under mine and see.

It's been awhile since I checked it, but I get about 14-15 in around town driving and about 20 on trips.
Right in line with the MPG website.
