air blows but not cold, please help

2001 Grand Cherokee Limited 4wd V8
The heat works great, but I get no cold air when ac is on, just blowing air. Have had it checked, is full of freon with no leaks. I have been told two different things by two different mechanics. One said that I needed the wiring replaced that runs from compressor to ac switch inside. Remove dash, all day labor, mega bucks!
The other said that I needed a new compressor because the wires aren't connecting correctly at the top. Again, mega bucks.
Now I tell this to a friend (shadetree mechanic) and he says that he should be able to "jimmy rig" the wiring and bypass going to the original switch and just put in some sort of toggle switch inside for me. I'm thinking that maybe he could run the wire inside through the firewall and maybe install the toggle inside the ashtray since all it does is hold pennies.
Is this possible to do? Also, is this going to correct the problem?
Like I said, I get blowing air it just doesn't get cold. I can't afford $1500 to get it fixed and am now going on year 3 without ac. Any other time it isn't a problem, but I'm going on a few trips this year where I have to drive and really need to get this fixed. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

try jumping the pins on the pressure switch and see if the compressor comes on.
Sometimes this switch dies so it will not turn on the AC

I doubt it is the compressor needs replaced. With the engine running look at the front of the compressor. If it is spinning with the belt it may need replaced but I think it is probally the clutch is not engaging and is something electrical.

Also, check the fuses. There is one somewhere for the AC.
