Hi there!
Is there a way to remove and salvage airbags that have not deployed? Is it that terribly difficult? (My Jeep rolled and I am stripping all salvagable parts).
Thanks!

That's one thing I was thinking about today. I know there is a way to pull the drivers but not too sure about the pass. side.
That's a high theft item.
You find them on e-bay all the time I guess. I just don't know what the legalities( if any) are to resell an air bag.

the airbags umbolt pretty easily, be sure to disconnect the battery before messing with the airbags (don't want any accidents). they sell on ebay all day long (1700+ at last count) shipping may be premium because of hazardous material in the airbag.

I think what he is saying is that there are 1700 listed on ebay, not that they go for $1700.

Yea I think they are around $1500 brand new or something like that.
LOL, What battery!!!! it was rolled & the battery didn't make it.
I was a tad surprized that the air bags didn't go off in the roll. I've seen quite a few that have.

Yeah, the battery was found in about 3 pieces LOL!
I too, was suprised about the air bags.... at 1st. I then realized that the front of the Jeep never really hit anything. The airbag impact switch is located on a brace that runs behind the bumper... as long as the bumper isn't forced back into it, the bags don't deploy. The switch, oddly enough, is actually dangling down off this brace now, completely untouched. The bumper was really only jarred on either end, which popped it most of the way off, having never gotten forced backwards. More of a side-2-side situation.
Anyhow, thanks for the tips gents!

they are about $600 to $700 new depending on make, there are listing for about 1700 units on ebay (all makes). they sell used ones for under $100 on ebay. the steering wheel one come off pretty easy, you will have to remove the dash cover to get at the passenger side I haven't done that one.

No, the airbag acceleration sensor is mounted on the floor between the front seats under the center consol. Don't know where you got that idea.
here it is

close up.
I'm pretty sure that the 98 is the same as the 97, but i was wrong once before

Thats actually the control module... it's the brain for it... but there is an impact trigger on the front of the car that sends the signal to that control modle, which then deploys the air bags It looks like an ignitor for a bbq grill

According to the FSM and parts list, that box is it. It has a accelerometer in it. When it detects a set amount of decceleration Gs (it something like 6 to 9 Gs, i don't know exactly) in the correct direction (front to back - due to a front end impact) it sets off the air bag. The only thing i can think of that is up in front of the radiator is the outside air temp sensor.
