I am looking to put on an after market winch bumper. I took the plastic bumper cover off of the front bumper and found the metal crossmember on my 97 ZJ bumper. I see that the metal crossmember is welded onto the frame.
To put on an after market bumper, does the factory crossmember have to come off, or is it customary for the after market bumper manufacturer to design their product to fit over the metal crossmember?
Most of the aftermarket bumpers I've seen require opening up the holes for the frame rails so their mounting brackets will fit, but they don't require sections of the crossmember to be removed.
That's usually done when building a custom bumper.
TJ, thanks for the pics... looks good! To cut the crossmember, what did you use? All that I have that would do the job is a sawsall. I don't have a cutting torch.
With ARB there is no cutting. It's relative to what bumper design you choose. With most of the popular brands there will be none or minimal modification to bolt it on.
