Adding a Towing Package?

I'm just about to buy a 96 laredo v6 2 wheel drive. It doesn't have a tow hitch so I'm assuming its not set up for towing. I saw that it can tow 2000lbs without the tow package and 5000lbs with it.

Question is, what does a "tow package" consist of? Can I add this now? And if so, who would I go to for that?

thanks all!

That's an I6, not V6.

Gears, tranny cooler, heavier differential fluid and a hitch.

What do you plan on towing with it?

What about wiring, I believe some years if you don't have the trailer package it isn't pre-wired for trailer brakes. With the reg cherokee you also get the d44 instead of the d35, not sure with the grands.

I was just planning on towing a small boat, maybe 18-22 ft. bowrider type. I dont have one yet, because I would like to know the weight capacity before I make the purchase.

How much do you think it would be to add those things to match the towing package?

thanks for the replies by the way

Re-gearing is $$$ but may not be neccesary. I don't think a trans cooler is much, if you can get away without needing trailer brakes wiring isn't much at all, you may already set up for the breaks. Call the dealer and see if you need a 4 pin(lights only) or &seven pin(may be pre wired for the brakes).

1996 Laredo is I6. Towing a boat don't need extra towing package. I have been towing horse trailer with two horeses with my 1986. I have added a trans cooler in front of the radiator. The car has now been running for 160K miles and hasn't given up yet.

Wiring's easy. You can buy kits at pretty much every hitch place to splice into your current wiring.

I think Walmart even sells the kits.

so the minimum I would need is a hitch and a trans cooler?

Should I go to a dealer or can a general mechanic take care of that?

A general mechanic would be more than happy to take your money to do this. Would cost a lot less than the dealer too.

Also larger alternator and wiring harness.

There is a special wire harness because of the computer modual. But with what you plan on doing I would not worry to much about the Tow package. If you find you need the Tranny cooler down the line then pick it up. But you should be fine.

The factory system is great. I installed the wiring and hitch on our 96'. It allready had the tow package prep. One problem, some of the rear harness assemblies were missing one of the turn signal pick ups for the relay pack. I don't remember which rt or lt? Installed a wire for the signal. Their was a TSB about the problem that Jeep put out.

I did like the factory hitch, its hidden behind the bumper, just the receiver hangs down.

As said above, make sure or install a trans cooler. Install the 85w-140 gear oil in the rear differential.

Here's what I did:

U-Haul Hitch, ball mount and ball (~$200 installed) - Vey nice!

Jeep factory 7-pin wiring harness ($45) - this wires to a connector located inside the driver's side rear interior quarter panel (be careful in removing this - it's easy to crack).

7-pin mount (~$5) from an off road store.

My GC already came with a transmission cooler.

thanks everyone... ok so here is what I'm gonna do

get the hitch + wiring

add a trans cooler

change diff fluid to a heavier grade

sound about right? Would that get me to the max tow capacity of 5,000 lbs?

Also, do you guys think there will be any trouble taking the boat out of the water with an I6 2wd GC? Ramps usually have declines. thanks again!
