About to tackle the Plenum Gasket
My 95' 5.2 recently started pinging and using about 2 quarts of oil every 3000 miles or so. The jeep has 97000 miles on it and runs great other wise, although I have noticed a decrease of about 2 mpg since the problem came about and its slowly getting worse. I have a factory service manual for the Jeep but I was wondering if anyone that has already done this has any advise or pointers for me? What am I looking at time wise for this repair and are there any special tools that will make this repair alittle easier? Anything else I should inspect or replace while I have the manifold out? By the way the Jeep leaks nor burns any oil so I am almost positive that this is the problem. Thanks Branden

Pinging & oil consumption are usually not related. Pinging for the most part is caused by a hotter than normal running motor. Heat can come from a partially clogged radiator, carbon build-up, or a clogged Cat and even a sloppy timing chain. You are either burning or leaking the oil, which I believe is a separate issue from the pinging. Is a plenum gasket the same thing as a throttle-body gasket? If pinging suddenly occurs; you can use a higher octane. But it also indicates that something is very wrong, and you will only mask the problem.
