'99 rotor question

Ive read all the problems with the brakes on '99s or so.

Saw something about 2 piece rotors? How can you tell if they are 2 piece or 1?

Search the forum for warped rotors and WJ. I'm pretty sure the 1 piece rotors are silver in color. Not sure about the 2-piece.

I know the calipers were different colors, you sure about the rotors?

Sorry, I'm a ZJ guy. But check www.wjjeeps.com as well. Tons of info on that page. Us ZJ guys are jealous of that site

This is an interesting manufacturing design concept. The composite rotor is junk. It is a lower base quality steel with a harder steel overlay. There will be a lip near the hub for this type. These are not to be confused with high performance composite rotors. They are for racing only. You want a full cast iron rotor (one solid piece). In general stay away from ceramic pads. These are clean and do not dust the rims as much but they also insulate the heat more. So heat dissipation is not as good and this heats the rotors which can cause warping. Semi-metallic pads will be dirtier but will not add as much heat to the rotors. If this is true then they should also stop at shorter distances! I warped a set of rotors within a week, after switching to ceramic pads.

On a different note: if anyone is going to have the rotors cut/resurfaced then it is to be done with them on the vehicle (with the rotors mounted to the hubs) to avoid hub run-out. This will give you the flattest surface possible. Many times it will be better than new rotors. This will cost much more however. You never cut a rotor if you previously have vibrations. Only cut rotors if there is no indication of warpage. People have rotors cut if the grooves are deeper than normal and you want two complete flat surfaces for maximum braking. If the grooves are too deep then the rotors needs replacement. That will be determined by the machinist.

I was just curious if i could tell the 2 piece apart from the other. Its for a friend, I believe the '99 has around 70K on it.. so its somewhat possible these are the original rotors but I doubt it.

$ 110 replaces both rotors and pads with DuraLast ones.

If you upgrade at all, get the upgraded Jeep calipers and brembo rotors. I also use stock pads and have had a signifigant increase in rotor life. It has not solved the issue, but the combination above has given me an extra 30,000 miles before they warp at all. This lifespan reasonably satisfies me and my wallet.
