99 JGC Rear Drive Shaft Seal
Where the rear drive shaft attaches to the rear differential the seal seem to be leaking. Is this an easy fix?
Also, just took a closer look. Not sure if it leaking from the top of the Diff or the seal. Why would it be leaking from the top? Dre97

most likely leaking from the seal. never heard of one leaking from the top. unless there is absolutely NO gasket/RTV at the top for some reason and its sloshing around when youre driving and spitting out. 1,000,000:1 says its coming from the pinion seal.

Umm, somehow I don't think that sound easy. I have no idea how to disconnect my driveshaft, let alone drop it and remove this so called nut.
mines leaking from the TC pinion seal, but I got a quote of 150 to fix it

It could be coming from the vent tube...or the seal failed on the top side.
It depends on how you define easy, and you need some non standard tools. INSTALLATION (1) Apply a light coating of gear lubricant on the lip of pinion seal. Install seal with an appropriate in installer (Fig. 31). (2) Install yoke on the pinion gear with Installer C-3718 and Spanner Wrench 6958 (Fig. 32). (3) Install a new nut on the pinion gear. Tighten the nut only enough to remove the shaft end play. CAUTION: Do not exceed the minimum tightening torque 298 N·m (220 ft. lbs.) when installing the pinion yoke retaining nut at this point. Damage to bearings may result. (4) Rotate the pinion a minimum of ten times and verify pinion rotates smoothly. Rotate the pinion shaft using an inch pound torque wrench. Rotating torque should be equal to the reading recorded during removal, plus 0.56 N·m (5 in. lbs.) (Fig. 33). (5) If rotating torque is low, use Wrench 6958 to hold the pinion yoke (Fig. 34) and tighten the pinion shaft nut in 6.8 N·m (5 ft. lbs.) increments until rotating torque is achieved. 6) Install propeller shaft with reference marks aligned. (7) Fill differential with gear lubricant. (8) Install the brake rotors and calipers. (9) Install wheel and tire assemblies. (10) Lower the vehicle.

If it is leaking from the top of the differential cover, then it just needs a new seal...If it is leaking from where the drive shaft connects, then it needs a new pinion seal.

just replaced my TC seal last week. all said and done it took about 45 minutes. you can disconnect and remove the rear driveshaft by removing the 4 small bolts that hold two small c-clamps to the driveshaft. then it simply slides forward and pulls out of the transfer case, allowing you to pull the old seal and pop in a new one. on a scale of one to ten (with an oil change at a one for reference), id say its no more than a 2 and the only "special" tool you need is a seal puller.

Rear Pinion Seal
Just took a few more to minutes check the leak at the rear differential.
The leak is at the rear pinion seal where the rear drive shaft attaches to the differential. The leak appears severe. The oil is all along the bottom of the differential and up the DF cover. Checking my Haynes manual, this appears to be a PIA job requiring special tools. I usually try to do all my own repairs. Is this one outside the limits of a "shade tree mechanic"? DRE97 |

You can do it yourself if you want. It really is not that bad.
