'99 Grand Cherokee 4.7 V8 - finishing a motor swap someone else started help ahhh!!!

Ok I just found this forum and registered but you all should know I'm no car newb and I've been a very active member of some car message boards since early 2002.

I'll give you a quick run down on the story. My dad bought 4 cars in NJ in a dealer auction and two of my brothers and I went so we could drive all 4 home to Utah. In Ohio one car blew up on us ('99 Ford Windstar), the auto tranny went out. My dad came back 2 weeks later and bought a '99 Grand Cherokee (4.7V8) in another local dealer auction, and used a car dolly to tow the van home to Utah. He made it as far as Wyoming and the Jeep developed a loud knock, later found to be rod knock (bad engine). Long story short we get the van and the Jeep home, get the van's auto tranny fixed. We found a local junk yard with a used low mileage 4.7 V8 out of another '99 Grand Cherokee (wrecked) that we could swap into ours.

A car friend's "mechanic" guy starts the motor swap for us. He gets the old motor out and new motor in with bolts through the motor mounts, and I guess he had a family emergency and had to take off out of state. Ok so now we need the Jeep done and nobody is working on it, so we tow it on a flat bed and get it in our garage.

Ok so now new people are working on finishing the motor swap. Let me give you a little idea of what this looks like. When old motor was pulled he unbolted the exhaust manifolds and left the entire exhaust intact in the car. Old wiring harness was taken off engine and laying around engine bay. New engine from junk yard still had all the wiring harness intact on it, and that motor was dropped into the car. Now the wiring is a TOTAL nightmare, lots of duplicate things, everything else still unbolted/disconnected.

Another mechanic guy of ours (works on motorcycles for our business but he is a very smart guy) starts working on it for us. On the whole wiring thing he basically started cutting pieces of OUR cars original wiring harness (that was all unplugged and laying everywhere) and throwing them out. I guess he got that all done and the harness on the engine all plugged into everything. But near the end of the job he realized he had NO connection left to plug the rear O2 sensor in. He got a lot of other stuff together but there was still a lot left and then...

I started working on it! Oh joy. Another mechanic guy has been helping me a little a few different days. Basically I got the flexplate all bolted up to the torque converter and that engine-tranny support piece bolted underneath. I ended up finally having to take the downipe off to get olds gaskets scraped off and the exhaust manifolds bolted up. Got the exhaust all back together finally. Got starter motor in and other stuff done and FINALLY got the car to a point where we can try to start! Lol turns out battery was very low so it barely cranked, its charging now.

K but there are a few things left not connected right and thats what I need the forum's help with! Here are the items:

- rear 02 sensor not plugged in, not connector anywhere (if I have a wiring diagram of the ECU plug or something with where the wires are for the rear 02 sensor I can run my own cable and solder them on so it works) I don't know if that would cause a check engine light or what.

- there are one or two hoses we have laying around that go somewhere, 3 or 4 connections, but we can only see one open connection near the intake tube. I'll try and get a pic in the morning should be easy to find where it goes.

- There is a sensor or something in the side of the engine block, passenger's side under the exhaust manifold, and its not connected. I see no loose wiring connectors I can plug into it. What is this? ECU pin out of this and I can run my own line to wire it up if I have to.

- Possibly a little more, I'll check it out again once the battery charges and try to start, and I'll try and get pics in the morning.

Sorry for the long post but I had to give the entire run down and all the information I know if I want to get the best help. Car forums are awesome I'm counting on you guys! This car has been TOTAL HELL you have no idea, 4 mechanics have been through a lot! Lord have mercy on me I've been through enough!

Well I can understand no replies with a long post like that.

My dad and grandpa worked on it and replaced the battery. I welded up an exhaust leak I had caused cutting up the downpipe to get it off. Got the thing started.

Makes a ticking sound, not quite sure what it is yet. Other connections still unplugged.

Took it to the Jeep dealership for diagnosis. I didn't get pics of those hoses up but they should fix those for us. Should hear back from them tomorrow afternoon and I'll post about it when we know anything else.

Sounds like your dad shouldn't buy cars from auctions.

I mean ... you could probably find a better deal on a complete working vehicle from a local used car lot .. rather than spending all that money fixing the auction cars. Theres usually a good reason a car ends up at an auction.

Just giving ya a hard time. Good luck with the repairs.

Alright the Jeep dealership figured out all kinds of stuff.

Just a couple more things we need to do. The tranny oil cooler has a hole in it, need a new one. Anybody know a good cheap aftermarket replacement instead of buying the $80 unit from the factory?

And yes I need to wire in the rear 02 sensor to get the check engine light to go off. So I need a diagram of those pins on the ECU plug or whatever.

They fixed the ticking thing, had to remove the starter and some other things and something was rubbing against the flexplate. Fixed other vacuum leaks and PCV stuff, starts up easy and seems to run great now.

My tranny cooler will be off soon as I no longer have an auto, I'll sell it for $40 plus shipping.

Do you know what year the new engine is from? They changed the PCM in '03 or '04 and there were some changes to the wiring harness. I imagine the sensors are very similar or the same, just wired differently. With the way the one mechanic cut a lot of the wiring, it may be a real challenge to sort out if this is the case. If you have both wiring harnesses, look for the PCM connectors. The PCM is behind the radiator fluid resevoir bolted to the firewall. On the '99-03 it has 4 rectangular plugs- white, gray and 2 black (I think). On the '04 (and maybe some '03's?) it has 3 almost square plugs- white, gray, and black. If you ended up with a newer motor and an older PCM you may have some interesting splicing going on, which might explain why you're coming up short on connections.

Also, if you haven't already, go to www.wjjeeps.com- there's lots of good info there which may help.

Good luck!

Tajman, I have a pdf of the parts list ( sketches, part number and names) for the '99 WJ, your welcome to it. If you want it, PM me with your email address and I'll send it via dropload.com or sendthisfile.com its about a 9mb pdf. I Don't know if it will help or not.

We were told the engine came out of another '99 Grand Cherokee.

I'm sure that plug just got cut off when he was cutting off pieces of the other harness.

I'm just looking for the pin diagram of the ECU plug so I can wire in the rear 02 sensor myself.

And I think we can get that oil cooler fixed so we won't need another one.

We got the 02 sensor wiring figured out! Easier than we thought it might be originally, and Jeep dealership helped with the wiring diagrams. I bet the reason its missing is because the junkyard forgot to pull one plug when they were lifting the motor and they ripped the cable out.

I'm gonna take the tranny oil cooler off tomorrow and when thats fixed she's good to go!

Sorry about that guys. Yeah I think you found it the first time. It was bull ebay pulled the listing because they thought it violated their polocy. Really all he said was that if you win the car, then see it in person and decide you don't want it, you only have to pay like $199 to cover initial time and eBay fees.

He's always doing stuff wrong on his eBay auctions that I disagree with. No matter it'll get put back up and he'll take that part out of the listing.

Our business account is "fullfactorywarranty"

I was drilling out a rivit on the oil cooler and I put a hole in the AC condensor. Ooops. Now I gotta fix that too.

Can't a radiator repair shop weld up and repair an AC condensor AND a tranny oil cooler just like a radiator? Once the place is open again after christmas we'll just tow the car in and get it welded while its still in the car attatched, not worth removing all that to take it out.
