99 GC = Hard Start

My wife usually drives our Jeep around. She knows as much about cars as I do about sewing. The other day I happened to be outside when she went to leave. As she started the Jeep I notice that it took longer to start. Am I correct in assuming it is the starter? Is there anything else I should look for?

Thanks.

Need more info. What do you mean by “it takes longer to start” ?

If the starter motor is moving the whole time the ignition key is in the start position, then the starter motor is fine.

The next time try this: turn the ignition key to the first position (Run not Start) wait three seconds and then start the engine. This will energize the fuel pump and get the pressure up to spec. This is most likely the problem. It is really not a problem just a hassle.

thank you. i will try that next time. yes the starter is turning whole time. i guess i should have said it has a harder time starting. although i dont know if that is a great explanation either.

i will try your suggestion.

It’s not a suggestion … it’s a guarantee

you are correct! today i took the jeep to work, and before starting it i would leave the key in the position for a few seconds. sure enough every time it would start right up after.

thank you.

now is there anyway to avoid having to do this pause? the wife barely remembers to put gas in the jeep.

My only concern is, I have to sell her (the jeep not the wife) in a few months. I am afraid that this problem may scare of would-be buyers.

Any thoughts?
