98 ZJ Gear Question

Ive seen a few comments on here about regearing once you lift over 4" on a Grabd Cherokee. But those comments, I believe, were for those with 3.55 gears and tires over 31". I have 3.73 gears with 6" of lift and 33s. Will I still need to regear or will I be ok with what I have? This will mainly be used for the beach and the street. Not much of anything else.

lift doesn't matter, it's tire size that does. if you want it to perform similar to stock again you'll want 4.56 gears for 33" tires.

'97 zj 5.2, some stuff, some other suff, and some things that even work sometimes.

This is all new to me. What would it hurt to leave the gears that are in it in it?

Decreased throttle response, loss of fuel efficiency, sub-optimal off-road performance.

If all you are doing is mall crawling then no big deal. If you are seriously wheeling then regear to 4.56's (or even better, 4.88's) and be amazed at the difference.

^^This. I feel a loss of power pushing 31's with my 5.2. ZJ's are already fairly heavy, add the extra strain of those 33's, and your smaller motor and I bet youre really feeling a decent loss of power. Its not mandatory by any means but you will notice a huge difference in power/performance if you re-gear deeper. 4.88's are the deepest you can go in that D30.

iv been on 31s with 3.55 in my D35 for awhile and 33s on a D44 with 3.73 is going to be my next upgrade
i hope it helps with gas but i also heard gas prices are going to drop

if it's too loud, you're too old!

Thanks for the input guys. I'm probably gonna do this once I get some more money flowing. I'm currently trying to straighten out some things from the previous owner. I gotta do motor mounts, front pinion seal, front t/c output seal, valve cover gasket, a radiator, and I'm waiting on my adj long arms. I also have to fix a flickering dash light problem that's driving me crazy at night. I may also have to put a new front axle housing in it since someone decided to wring one bolt off and cross-thread another. Considering all this tho, I think I got a decent deal. $1800 and the interior is almost flawless and the exterior has no damage whatsoever. Not to mention the wheels and tires and the half**s lift that's on it. Work in progress.
