hey im looking to buy a 98 grand cherokee laredo and it's 4x4 and ive never owned a 4x4 before. i was just wondering if it cost more than a regular one to get it fixed or anything like that? and has anyone had any problems w/ their 4x4? it ran really good and i just want to make sure nothing may happen later on that would make me regret buying it. so please help me out here

bama,

We'll need more info on it like engine size and any other specs you can give us. If it is a 98, it'll have either the 4.0, 5.2 or 5.9.

You mean you have an I6 That I6 is a great durable engine. What kind of transfer case does it have?

I drive a 98 I6 TSi much the same as LAREDO, it as 160000 km on the clock
I live in middle east so the cost of part is higher but so far no problem,
I do use it in desert so oil and filter change more often,
Go buy it and have fun !

great jeep. watch out for the following:

* fuel pump issues. located in the tank sending unit. PITA to replace

* front spindles strip out. bolts that hold calipers to the front spindles do not like to be removed. make sure to use heat before trying to remove bolts.

* recall. make sure it has all up to date recall service performed. email your vin# to jeep and they will give you a build sheet and also tell you weather or not any recalls are still outstanding.

other than minimal stuff - it is a great jeep. the 8cyl does better while towing, but the 6cyl gets better mpg (select-a-trac version).

i love my jeep. the only other vehicle i wanted instead of my jeep when i went ot buy it was a Ford Excursion with the 7.2 diesel in it - or a H1 hummer with the diesel. but they are much more $$ - so the choice was obvious.

thumbs up from me.

Hey bamafan378!

I love my 4.0! I was almost thinking of selling mine for a 5.9 but I've heard the V-8's are more prone to problems than the I-6's (the 4.0's are also called the 200,000mi. engine.) so they are definately a work-horse.

One problem that I have had addressed was the stock exahaust manifold cracking, in my case it was at the collector. I decided to replace it with a Gibson header and from there with Kolak's exhaust upgrade.(see sig.).

Next to that, just keep it tuned-up and have the oil and transfer case fluids changed periodically and it should give you years of great service.

How about a little info on the ZJ you're considering buying.

Hope This Helps,
- DrumBoy.

What is Jeep's e-mail address? I bought a 2001 Grand Cherokee (72,000 miles) two months ago and I'm curious about what work has been done. The dealer provided me with a Carfax printout but nothing on it says about any recall work. The Jeep has been taken well care of, non smoker, super clean so I'm hoping that work has already been taken care of.

I love the 4.0, it's a great classic engine (the basic design dates back to the early 60's) thats very easy to work on. It eats other SUV's puny V-6's for lunch and a real torque monster. My parents have a 1995 Grand Cherokee with 170,000 miles on it and its still running strong. That was my #1 reason for buying my own with a 4.0. Mines a 2-Wheel drive and I'm getting 17-to-28 "Instant Miles Per Gallon" on the mileage computer while running 70mph+ on the freeway.
