97 ZJ 4.0 will crank, no start. HELP!
I have been trying to fix this problem for 2 months now. I have been on several forums and no luck/help has resolved my problem. I have tried everything. I have 2 ZJ's and since I have been changing parts from one to the other the one that was running is now not running. One of them just turns over, the other will start for 2/3 seconds then quits everytime. Both ECU's have been replaced, CKS, CMS, IAC, TPS, plenty of fuel, 47 psi at the fuel rail. I have disconnected the battery's, so I thought the alarm was an issue. I found the purple wire with yellow tracer and grounded it, no luck. the other one that starts for 2/3 seconds does not have an alarm system on it so there is no purple/yellow wire under the drivers door panel. There has got to be something I am missing, something simple. I NEED HELP! I don't want or have the funds to bring to the dealership.
Come on guys, There has to be a techy guy out there that has had this situation before.

Again the pump will only run for 1-2 seconds before starting but the bad caps causes a delay in this cycle. OP: Are you sure your getting spark?

90% of crank no starts I get at the shop here with Jeeps are bad crank sensors.

Hello Vansskaterfreek. I am glad to hear a Jeep tech is trying to help me out, Thanks.
OK, the only codes is 12 and then 55 which I have been told is totally normal. CKS and CMS have both been changed. No play in the Dizzy. I also have spark and plenty of fuel pressure at the fuel rail. I am not a great technician, but I have been working on vehciles since 91 so the ordinary stuff I have checked, double checked and triple checked. How can this be a fuel problem when I have plenty of fuel pressure at the rail? I have been told that it is an alarm problem. What do you think???? |

Hello Muddy, thanks for the reply. The CKS is one of the first things I did to it, but no luck. Is there a way to check to make sure it is getting the signal it needs to get???

best I can offer is to get a free download from jeepslimited.com , sign up , down load a 98 manual , no 97 listed , but should be the same , it will have the how to`s on testing sensors and wiring outputs .
Can you hear the injector click(screw driver to ear method against the injector) , just to make sure it`s pulsing or getting a signal . Have you tested the fuses for output with the key on and off ? I`m also thinking ignition switch , but just a guess

im guessing you tried flooring it while cranking?? did you check compression? and if so how do the plugs look?
the cylinders are probably washed out so put a few drips of oil down the tubes if all that is good then check the timing because if it has fuel and spark and good compression then it should run if its timed right did you ever take the distributor out? and if so is it set correctly. |

most fuel injected engines will go into a lean condition when you floor it to start in case it has gotten flooded.

I tried the flooring trick, but I can't. Because I was stupid enought to believe that grounding the Purple wire with Yellow tracer trick would work. All this did for me is kill my battery. Now I have to recharge it. Whoever had this idea I want to thank you for the bottom of my heart. You really know what you are doing.
Anyways, once it is charged I will try the flooring trick. I think I am going to return the CKS where I got it from for another one. |

Joe, its weak now, but will soon be fine with the charge. Before I did the alarm disconnect trick the battery was fine and cranked with no problem. Believe me, this is not a battery problem.
