96 ZJ...Good Deal?

So this guy will take $2000 cash for this ZJ.
http://chico.craigslist.org/cto/4268303696.html

It has 145k with the 5.2 and Dana 44a, right?
My question being, first off is this a fair deal?
My second and BIGGEST question, I know these ZJ's came with the 242 AND 249. How often did these get stuck with the 249? Id REALLY rather have a 242 with selectable 2WD. Not looking to do a swap at this point in time.

249 and the V8 go hand and hand . No 231 or 242 for the V8 stock . 2k is a fair price IMO . Swapping a 242 transfer case in the 96 is a bolt on application minus the possibility of cutting the rear driveshaft 1" . The 231 can bolt up w/o any changes

I paid $4500 for a 98 that was rust-free with 120k two years ago. Sounds like a great deal to me.

You don't "get stuck" with the 249. It is far superior to the 242.

The only thing I dont fancy about the 249...us the full time AWD. I just dread having to swap out the VC sometime in the near future.

I plan on doing it later down the road when the 249 starts to bind.
ALL V8 models came with the Dana 44a, right?
I heard they like to warp, what exactly causes them to do so?

Whats everyone's take on the 44RE?

Good to know. All this one needs is a serpentine belt, pads all the way.around and what.sounds like a dimmer swith. He says the cluster guage will randomly and periodically dim down and back up. When he holds the dimmer switch still, its fine.
So how hard or big of a job is this dimmer switch?

I am in the Sacramento area and stocked CL for months waiting for a "good deal". I picked mine up (a stock 96 5.2) with 205K, a toasted driver seat upholstery and control module, the brakes pads are gone, and AC doesnt work. Other than that its in good shape and I paid $1700 a few weeks ago. It took me months to find one that cheap so I would say $2000 is a good deal.

Yeah so far all this one needs is the dimmer switch, brake pafs all around and a serpentine belt. With only 145k on it..i think it was a good deal. Im jyst keeping my fingers crossed that it will have a Dana 44a under it. I really dont want a 35

Should've waited a little while longer. I might be selling mine in around 4-6 months. 190k 94 laredo power everything, new AC, new PCM, new TPS, new water pump. Going to post it for 2k and i'd take the first 17 $100 bills that show up.

OP, that's a pretty good price if it's in said condition. I don't believe any v8 zj came factory with anything other than the 249 transfer case. As far as the d44a rear axle, pre96 models I think it was optional, after that, it was stock like the 249 is. Btw, the 249 is an excellent transfer case. Really, the only downside to it is the fact it has a VC that needs replaced on avg every 100k miles or so, and you don't have part time high gearing. In retrospect, replace it 3-4 times from brand new to the vehicle's journey to the scrap yard, I'll take that issue. Everything about which is best really goes mostly on personal opinion, just saying..
Just to make life easy, if you get it and charge up the A/C, get some freon that has the dye already in it. That way if it does have a leak, it'll be easy to spot it. Only time you wont find the dye is if it's the evap coil in the dash(like my problem is).
