96 ZJ GC Loud clunk from rear when turning

Hi Guys,

I have a 96 ZJ and when i turn a corner at slow speed i get a clunk coming from the rear and it feels as if i have my hand brake on or my brakes are hanging on. I have checked the brakes and they are fine, sliders are nice and free and the piston in the callipers mive nice and free, i have also checked the oil in my rear axel which is a dana 35 got plenty oil in it it is looking a little brown so it my need a change. I was just wondering if any of you guys have had the same problem and may be able to give me some advice on this.

Thanks.

PS iam new to the forum and from the uk.

Looks like your visco's are gone to the dogs...

Try to make '8' figures at slow speed in a parking lot somewhere at idle speed...

If your jeep hungs up or makes funny noises or has trouble doing this, you won first prize.

Visco's are Visco coupled gearing devices.

They lock your axle in case of slipping and getting stuck.

During normal drive, they should unlock, and that is what they don't do anymore on old axles...

Then the ride gets bumpy.

Replacing means axle revision and this isn't cheap.

So, go to a parking lot and start making those 8-figures and let us know how it went.

Or hop over the channel and come to Bruges

I think he's talking about the clutches in the rear diff!!?? I have no idea what Viscos are. Anyway, it sounds like the clutches and plates are binding in the diff. The last time I checked, the repair kit was still available through Mopar and some gear venders. New LSD units are still available through Dana parts suppliers as well.

Sounds more like he's talking about the viscuous coupler in the transfer case. If that's bad need a new transfer case.

Rear End

dude just drain your rear diff and check your spider and axle gears, chepest thing to check. thats where i would start, also make sure your whole rear end is in the air so you can spin your tires and check the ring and pinion.
I can't see any way that it could be your tc if you hear it in the rear end. And you should check your yoke on the drive shaft side of your rear diff, could be loose and at slow speeds your tc and rear end could be getting confused causing the yoke to bang around. I know it sounds weird but it happens. let me know. Have Fun!

Hi Daldo
Just been out to drain the oil in my diff and it is as thick as hell look's like thick black sludge, not to happy with that as it supposed to have been changed by the last owner be he sold it to me, and also found three bit's of teeth from one of the gears. Not good so iam going to try and see wot it's like with a oil change, also drained the tc oil and that is looking like crap to so going to refill that with fresh oil. And see if i still get the clunk, if i do then it look's like a repair kit of of ebay.

sounds like 2 problems viscous coupler in the tcase binding and a limited slip problem in the rear
make sure when you change the rear diff oil you put in a friction modifier

the factory trac lok diffs are always broken

Alright man you need to take the carier pin out or the carier, 12 PT 6mm socket you'll strip it with anything else, when you take that out you need to remove the axle and spider gears. After you take the gears out you will be able to see your ring and pinion allot beter. Hopefully you will only have to change out the axle and spiders, about 94$ on quadratec. just changing the oil in the diff will do absolutly nothing but waste your time. Needs to be fixed.
