So, sometimes my AC kicks out very cold air and sometimes it doesn't. I know it has good refrigerant level. I haven't checked the high side... need to buy a good manifold gauge set.
What's very strange is that the engine idles sometimes very high at around 1,000 RPM or higher. It only seems to do this when the AC is turned on, and usually, it is kicking out cold air. If I turn of the AC when it does this, RPMs will drop down to 500 a moment later or so.
Other times, the AC is blowing warm or ambient temperature air, which means the compressor is not engaging I am guessing, and when this is happening, the engine idles at it's normal 500 RPM.
Any ideas? I suspect I need a new compressor. It's the original and is currently 15 years old and has 352,000 miles on it.
How can I replace this myself? How do I go about getting the AC discharged? I've called several places and they all claim they aren't allowed to discharge without doing the repair work. I just don't have $600 to have someone else do this repair.
