96 grand cherokee wont reverse with driveshafts removed

Im having a heck of time diagnosing this problem with my 1996 jeep grand cherokee v8 full time 4x4. the jeep started making a horrible metal scraping sound consistant with speed and will not move more than 5 feet in reverse before locking up and suddenly stopping. I removed the front and rear driveshafts and I still cant push it more than a few feet before locking up with everything in neutral. I can only guess that it is a differental, transfer case that is trashed in neutral, or rear brakes.
Any input will be appreciated.

Won't be transfer casee, since it doesnt move anywhere even without driveshafts. Check the rear brakes first since they're less messy to deal with, but chances are its the diff.

Parking brake shoes in the rear could have come apart and are bound up in the rotor.
