96 grand cherokee Whistling

So i got a 96 grand cherokee. 160k miles. Straight 6 4litre. And recently i noticed a kind of whistling or howling noise. And the faster i go, the louder it gets. Haven't actually experienced any issues, i just have a feeling that's a warning sign of something about to go wrong. Im also having a definite power loss when going uphill. I could literally floor it going uphill and the most i can go is 50mph. Dont know if they are connected or not. PLEASE HELP

This forum is for the XJ cherokee, and you're describing a ZJ grand cherokee so you might get better answers in the right spot. There are differences even with the same I6.

That said it sorta sounds like a bad vacuum leak, except that shouldn't care about uphill or not. This whistle/howl, is it really high pitched or low? Can you localize it to an area of the engine bay with the car in park?

Moved to the Grand Cherokee forum section where your fellow ZJ drivers can best assist.
The symptoms described do sound as though you might be experiencing a vacuum leak.

As far as the howling, we cant findit. We lifted it fully up and i revved it to makeit howl and my dad walked around looking to see where its coming from. And he said it sounds ike its coming from front AND back. He cant pinpoint it (hes an ex mechanic) he so lost now. Someone told me it could be a bearing somewhere but ijust dunno. Theres also a growling coming from my engine. I DO know that.

The 4.0 has a known issue with cracking the exhaust manifold, noise like you describe and loss of power are the usual symptoms.

I think we found it. Its gotten worse the last few days. Now when i go over 50mph, theres a loud grinding noise on the left front. Makes me think something in the differential. Bearings maybe. Would explain sudden grinding and noise?
