96 door wont open from outside

So about a week ago my friends driver side door handle stopped opening the door, but you can open it from the inside.. anyone have any clue what to look at or how expensive this could be?

Child safety locks are only in the back I believe, esp not DS door: but does the button give at all when you press it, or does it just push down real easy?

Quite possible that the linkage came loose in there. Remove the door panel (3 screws and several body panel clips), then carefully peel back the vapor barrier - careful not to rip it, you need to put it back. When you look in the body of the door, you'll see what I'm talking about. They're basically steel rods that have a right angle and a plastic clip to retain them. The one going from the door handle to the latch may have come loose.
