'95 GC won't shut off

bought this Jeep w/problems, still trying to get it running. I knew it overheated when I got it, but it developed a new problem--turn the key to off, the engine keeps running. It won't shut off even if I disconnect the negative battery cable. I have to pull the fuel pump relay to get it to shut of. I have bench-tested the fuel pump and ASD relays, and they are working properly.

Dang...sounds like a diesel problem lol. I don't know how combustion can continue without a spark...there's no way it could get hot enough in there to cause combustion...could it?

No, it isn't dieseling, the injectors & ignition are still working. Some of the warning lights will stay on, too--the ones that come on when the key is "On" before you start it.

Even when you disconnect the negative battery cable? Have you tried disconnecting the injector wires?

Disconnecting the Neg Battery Terminal wouldn't shut the engine off because once the engine is running all electronics run off the Alternator primarily, battery secondary. So as long as your alternator is good, the engine could run itself without having a battery connected.

Yeah, I decided that all disconnecting the battery cable did was prove my alternator was working.

Is there a switch somewhere in the column that could have gone bad or shorted?

It sounds like a bad ignition switch. My logic: the opposite of occurs when the lock cylinder goes bad (where you turn the key over and it does not spring back or kick over the starter, however all electronics kick on).

Someone said to me the ignition is not replaceable and the entire column would have to be swapped out is that true?

To my knowledge it is replaceable. I have replaced the ignition switch on my fathers 1994 Dodge Ram twice and the setup is almost exactly the same on the Grand Cherokee (it may even be the same part number)

You should have to remove the Steering Column Cover, remove the lock cylinder, then remove the Ignition Switch. A special torx bit is required (with a hole in the center of the bit) to remove some of the screws for the Lock cylinder.

I thought the switch fixed it, until I tilted the steering wheel all the way toward the dash. That's the real issue, but I don't know what's going on inside. Pinched wires? something messed up with the steering lock?
